Discover Tay Tar Thai @borehamwood

Finding proper Thai food outside central London can feel like a gamble, but Tay Tar Thai @borehamwood at 42 Shenley Rd, Borehamwood WD6 1DR, United Kingdom genuinely surprised me in the best way. Tucked along Shenley Road among cafés and local shops, this independent Thai restaurant manages to balance authenticity, warmth, and serious kitchen skill without feeling overly formal or intimidating.

The first thing that stood out during my visit was the aroma. Lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, and freshly crushed garlic drifted from the open kitchen area. If you’ve ever studied Thai cuisine or followed guidance from organizations like the Tourism Authority of Thailand, you’ll know that these aromatics are foundational to achieving proper depth in dishes like tom yum and green curry. Here, they’re not just present-they’re vibrant.

I ordered a classic pad Thai and a green curry with jasmine rice as a baseline test. In professional tastings, chefs often evaluate Thai food based on balance: sweet, sour, salty, spicy, and bitter working in harmony. According to culinary research published by the Thai Ministry of Commerce, this five-flavor equilibrium defines authentic Thai cooking. The pad Thai here delivered that balance beautifully. The tamarind tang cut through the sweetness, the fish sauce added umami depth, and the crushed peanuts gave texture without overpowering the noodles.

The green curry was equally impressive. The coconut milk wasn’t overly heavy, which can sometimes dull the spice profile. Instead, the heat built gradually. Thai green chilies are known to rank between 50,000 to 100,000 Scoville Heat Units, and while this wasn’t extreme, it had a confident warmth that felt deliberate rather than accidental. The chicken was tender, and the aubergine had soaked up the curry sauce perfectly. That attention to cooking method-proper simmering instead of rushing-makes a visible difference.

Service also deserves recognition. On my second visit, I came with a friend who follows a vegetarian diet. Instead of simply removing meat, the staff recommended specific menu adjustments and explained which sauces contained shrimp paste. That level of transparency builds trust. It aligns with best practices promoted by the UK Food Standards Agency regarding allergen awareness and clear communication. You can tell the team understands not just food, but responsibility.

The dining space itself is intimate yet comfortable. Soft lighting, subtle Thai décor, and neatly spaced tables create a relaxed atmosphere. It works equally well for a casual midweek dinner or a small celebration. Borehamwood locals I spoke to mentioned they frequently choose this spot for takeaway as well, and judging by the steady flow of delivery orders, it’s clearly a community favourite.

Online reviews across major platforms consistently highlight portion size and flavour authenticity. From my own experience, portions are generous without feeling excessive. The pricing feels fair for Hertfordshire standards, especially considering ingredient quality. Thai cuisine relies heavily on fresh herbs and imported sauces, which naturally affects cost. The fact that Tay Tar Thai @borehamwood maintains quality while keeping prices reasonable suggests strong supplier relationships and thoughtful management.

One detail I appreciated was the consistency between visits. In hospitality, consistency is often harder to achieve than excellence. The second time I ordered the same green curry, it tasted nearly identical to the first visit-same spice level, same depth. That indicates standardized preparation processes, likely including pre-measured curry pastes and controlled cooking times. It’s a small operational detail, but it speaks volumes about professionalism.

Of course, no restaurant is perfect. During peak weekend hours, service can slow slightly, which is understandable for a popular independent venue with limited seating. Reservations are a smart move if you’re visiting on a Friday or Saturday evening.

Overall, the experience reflects genuine expertise in Thai culinary technique, a thoughtful menu selection featuring staples like massaman curry and stir-fried basil dishes, and a welcoming local atmosphere. For anyone searching in Borehamwood for authentic Thai flavours, balanced spices, reliable service, and consistently positive reviews, this spot confidently earns its place on the shortlist.

  • I had a wonderful experience at Tay Tar Thai in Borehamwood. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with traditional Thai decor and soft music that creates an authentic yet relaxed vibe. The staff were especially welcoming. Mr. May , stood out with his polite, friendly service, big smile, and great personality. And also Mr. Sawai, the (chef) whose passion for Thai cuisine truly shines through in the dishes. We ordered the Lab Duck and Papaya Salad very delicious and my boyfriend chose the Chicken Pad Thai and Salt & Pepper Chicken. Everything was full of flavor, generously portioned, and perfectly balanced in spice and sweetness. I appreciated that the spice level could be adjusted to suit personal preference. Service was quick and attentive, The prices are very reasonable for the quality and taste you get. Overall, Tay Tar Thai is a fantastic spot if you’re craving authentic Thai food. I’m already planning to return especially to try the mango sticky rice, which comes highly recommended!

  • Had been meaning to try this restaurant for a while. Went to collect my order, whilst waiting i noticed the decor was very nice and modern. Nice quiet atmosphere, would be lovely for a date night. The order only took 15 mins to prepare which was great. We had the mixed starter which was lovely, the chicken stir fry and massaman curry. My partner and I did think the dishes were on the sweet side but overall they were nice. Ordered two rices however only one rice is needed for two people.

  • We loved every bit of it! The food was amazing; a great range to choose from. We especially enjoyed the Goong Chu Chi (chef's special) with coconut rice, YUM! We were stuffed by the end of the main course, but couldn't resist the temptation for desserts. Ordered Thai Pancake and the in-season special, Mango and Sticky Rice and devoured both! On top of that, the service was top teir, very friendly and attentive. We will definitely return!

  • Very nice food and friendly staff. A bit long waiting time but the restaurant was full on Tuesday evening so it says a lot about its popularity too. We took Tay Tar Thai Platter (For 2) for a starter and the portion was nice for two but we feel like it should cost less. For main we went for a set menu; - Roasted Duck Curry - the best 9/10 - Stir-fried chicken with cashew nuts and dried chilies - correct 8/10 - Lamb sautéed with vegetables in garlic & black pepper sauce - I hate lamb as it always stinks for me and I can't even swallow it. It was the first time I was able to try it and I really liked it! - 9/10 - Pad Thai noodle with prawns (N) - for the first time I have had noodle like that; mouthwatering, not dry or too oily - 9/10 - Steamed Rice - too small portion for 2 adults - 5/10 I am very happy about the whole visit, we will visit again.

  • Thought I'd pop in for a quick bite to eat, as I had heard that the food here was really good. I can happily say that the food here is not just good, it is delicious. Friendly staff, lovely atmosphere and the waitress named Tum (Dhom) was polite, attentive and deserves all the praise that she gets, as she made my lunch meal a very enjoyable one. I ordered the Thai green curry which was aromatic, had tender chicken pieces swimming in a heavenly sauce and dim sum for starters. These came well presented and were juicy, succulent and literally melted in my mouth. Will I come back, definitely yes Will I tell my friends and family about this place, in a heartbeat I look forward to my next visit and implore that if you are in or around Borehamwood, then pop into Tay Tar Thai for some truly amazing food, and set in a warm and friendly and welcoming atmosphere. ยอดเยี่ยมอย่างแน่นอน xx

  • Truly fabulous!! Why haven't we found this place sooner! Excellent menu and amazing staff. A relaxed environment with really tasty and authentic food. They also have an allergen information listed at the back of the menu - genius - more restaurants should follow this great example. Highly recommend... can't wait to go again :-)

  • Such a delightful surprise to find this gem in a small town. The flavours are excellent with the heat spices carefully controlled, but don't worry they are quick to bring out fresh chillies upon request. Parking is quite tight on the street and be sure to book an appointment ahead as they seem to fill up quickly - check their hours. The shop is handicap accessible. I was very excited to even find a fresh pandan desert. The meal pictured below was less than £30. (One glass of wine not pictured)
